The seeds that are exchanged in these meetings are special — most are organic, heirloom from an older plant strain and some are not even available from your local garden store.

Become A Friend. Help Fundraise. Funded Programs. Incorporate seed saving into your educational programs by hosting workshops. Organize a seed swap for members of your community to share seeds for their gardens. Start a seed library where gardeners are encouraged to take home seeds to grow under the condition that they bring new, healthy seeds back at the end of the season.
The Community Seed Resource Program In collaboration with Seed Matters , we are offering educational tool kits and mentorship for community groups who want to fold seed saving into their ongoing work.
Qualifying applicants receive: a community seed toolkit , including seeds, educational resources, and seed saving supplies access to SSE's national seed exchange mentorship in seed saving and community organizing around seeds.
Active CSRP Groups There are currently 65 Community Seed Resource Program groups active from every corner of the United States. Take a look at some examples of groups we are working with: Sieda Seeds of Hope - Centerville, IA Sieda Seeds of Hope is a community garden and nutrition program through Sieda Community Action Agency, serving seven counties in southeast Iowa.
Blue Island Park District Community Garden - Blue Island, IL Blue Island Park District Community Garden is a community garden maintained by the Blue Island Parks District and comprised of gardeners from the community: learning how to save seed, hosting seed swaps, and collaborating with other regional organizations.

Did you know that the number of cabbage varieties in the commercial seed trade has decreased by 52 percent in just three decades, from in to 95 in ? You can help preserve the remaining varieties, and bolster biodiversity, by planting this biennial crop and saving its seed!
To save cabbage seed, select at least three firm, ready-to-eat cabbage heads in the fall. Remove the plants, roots and all, and store them in a root cellar, refrigerator, or cold basement, being sure to keep the roots damp and cold during the winter. In the early spring, replant the plants, leaving two to three feet in between them.
Each plant will produce a seed stalk directly from its center. Cabbage seeds ripen slowly and fall off immediately when they are ripe; either harvest the whole plant as the pods turn yellow or pick the dry pods when they turn brown.

Seed Savers Exchange staff and seed rematriation project partners recently gathered for a field day Ukwakhwa to celebrate the past two years of rematriation work, connect with each other, and learn from one another and from the seeds. Thanks to Becky and Steve Webster for hosting the event and to North Central Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education SARE for providing funds for the event!
The program included a tour of Ukwakhwa, a soil-health workshop by Jessika Greendeer DreamofWildHealth, tips on growing and cooking with blue corn by Kellie Zahn and Warren M from stockbridgemunsee, and a conversation about the healing power of seeds with Shelley Buffalo.
We get to do the slow work of tending seeds. Once harvested from the field, the garlic plants are placed in a cool, dry place for a few weeks to dry.
