This is where a low-glycemic diet comes into play. To put it simply, a low-glycemic diet is one that focuses on foods that are low on the glycemic index. The glycemic index assigns a number to any foods that contain carbohydrates. This number determines what kind of effect the food will have on your body — particularly on your blood sugar levels.

When we eat a low-glycemic diet, we stick to foods that have a lower number on the glycemic index because we want our blood sugar levels to remain slow and steady, as opposed to the dramatic ups and downs caused by foods with high numbers on the glycemic index.

The glycemic index classifies foods into three categories: low GI, medium GI, and high GI. Foods with a low-GI have numbers from Foods with a medium GI range from 56 to 69, while foods with a high GI are 70 and higher. The diet is simple once you get the hang of it. Once you find that out, you can determine whether or not you should eat it.

Simplicity is key when it comes to sticking to a dietary regimen. Complex diets are often too difficult to maintain, leading us to give up on them before we achieve positive results. Healthy blood sugar levels are key when it comes to sustainable weight loss.

Because foods that spike blood sugar levels also increase the amount of insulin in the body. When insulin is continually too high, insulin-resistance often follows, which makes the body secrete even more insulin. Low GI foods help keep blood glucose levels under control, which also promotes appetite control.

You can think of a low-glycemic diet as a slow-carbohydrate diet. The carbohydrates eaten cause a slow, steady rise in blood glucose, as well as a slower release of insulin from the pancreas. David Jenkins, a Canadian professor 1. The rates at which different foods raise blood sugar levels are ranked in comparison with the absorption of 50 grams of pure glucose.

Pure glucose is used as a reference food and has a GI value of Foods with a low GI value are the preferred choice. On the other hand, foods with a high GI value should be limited. You can use this database to find the GI value and glycemic load, described below of common foods.

Examples of these foods include:. The glycemic index GI is a ranking system that classifies carb-containing foods by their effect on blood sugar levels. David Jenkins. The GI of a food or meal is influenced by a number of factors, including the type of sugar it contains, the structure of the starch, the cooking method, and the level of ripeness.

The rate at which foods raise blood sugar levels depends on three factors: the types of carbs they contain, their nutrient composition, and the amount you eat. The GL is a measure of how a carb affects blood sugar levels, taking both the type GI and quantity grams per serving into account.

However, the Glycemic Index Foundation , an Australian nonprofit raising awareness about the low GI diet, recommends that people also monitor their GL and aim to keep their total daily GL under Otherwise, the easiest way to aim for a GL under is to choose low GI foods when possible and consume them in moderation.

The glycemic load GL is a measure of the type and quantity of the carbs you eat. Diabetes is a complex disease that affects millions of people worldwide 6.

Those who have diabetes are unable to process sugars effectively, which can make it difficult to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

However, good blood sugar control helps prevent and delay the onset of complications, including heart disease, stroke, and damage to the nerves and kidneys 7 , 8 , 9. On the other hand, high GI diets have been linked to heart disease and an increased risk of certain cancers. There are plenty of healthy and nutritious foods to choose from. You should build your diet around the following low GI foods:.

More well-designed and adequately-powered studies are needed. They should follow a standardised intervention protocol, adopt objective outcome measurement since blinding may be difficult to achieve, and make efforts to minimise loss to follow-up.

The duration of the interventions varied from eight weeks to 18 months.

No studies reported on all-cause mortality. Two adverse events were reported in one study: one was not related to the intervention, and the other, an eating disorder, may have been related to the intervention.

Another study reported 11 adverse events, including hypoglycaemia following an oral glucose tolerance test. The same study reported seven serious adverse events, including kidney stones and diverticulitis.
