Inhibitory Control Inhibitory Control at the Level of Behavior Inhibitory control of behavior is self-control or response inhibition — resisting temptations, thinking before speaking or acting, and curbing impulsivity.

Inhibitory control of behavior self-control improves with activities like the following. Activities That Improve Inhibitory Control of Behavior Games like Simon Says great for all ages.

Dramatic play acting to practice inhibiting acting out of character. Performing a comedic routine to practice trying not to laugh at your own jokes. The listener receives a simple line drawing of an ear to help the child remember to listen and not speak. This activity is part of the Tools of the Mind curriculum.

Activities That Improve Inhibitory Control of Attention Perhaps the quintessential activity for challenging inhibitory control of attention selective attention is singing in a round. Listening to stories read aloud should improve sustained attention as it requires listeners to work to keep their attention focused without visual aids, such as pictures on the page or puppets acting it out.

We found that listening to storytelling improves sustained auditory attention more than does listening to story-reading where the illustrations are shared after each page is read. Activities that challenge balance as well as focused attention and concentration: Walking on a log.

Walking on a line. Similar to walking on a log, this activity is as challenging for young children as walking on a log or balance beam is for adolescents and adults. To increase the challenge, children can try to do this while balancing with something on their heads or racing with an egg in a spoon.

Walking with a bell and trying not to have it make a sound can be a fun activity for a group of people of all ages. It is also great for calming down. Other ideas: beading , juggling, etc. Working Memory Working memory is the ability to hold information in the mind and to work or play with it.

Play a storytelling memory game in a group, where one person starts the story, the next person repeats what was said and adds to the story, and so on. Storytelling has been found to improve vocabulary and recall in children more than does story-reading, 4 which is important because vocabulary assessed at age 3 strongly predicts reading comprehension at years of age.

A Note on Computerized Cognitive Training CogMed® is the computerized method for training working memory with the most and the strongest evidence.

Play think-outside-the-box games. Come up with creative, unusual uses for everyday objects. You can eat at a table, for example, but you can also hide under it, use it as a percussion instrument, or cut it up for firewood — the list is endless.

Find commonalities between everyday items and make a game of it. Example: How is a carrot like a cucumber? Like an orange? Like a potato? Use limited data to select advertising.

Leadership Team Meet the leadership that's passionate about empowering your workforce. Meditating or practicing mindfulness activities can strengthen well-being and mental fitness and improve focus. Products BetterUp Lead Build leaders that accelerate team performance and engagement. In this article, we explore the key to boosting capability development in Create a calm dedicated space for work , if possible.
How can people improve concentration and focus?

In today's fast-paced and attention-demanding world, leaders hold a vital role in guiding their employees towards strategic thinking and innovation. However, to effectively fulfill this role, leaders must first master the art of directing their own attention.

By focusing inward, towards others, and the external environment, leaders can tap into their full potential and inspire those around them to reach unprecedented heights.

As Daniel Goleman says in the HBR article, The Focused Leader , attention can be put three broad buckets—focusing on yourself, focusing on others, and focusing on the wider world. In my Trust Forces Model from my book Trusted to Thrive , get a free chapter here , I also talk about self-focus micro , people focus meso and external focus macro.

But I talk about them from the perspective of both oppositional and supportive trust forces. As I mentioned in last week's article, on 5 Silent Trust Decelerators , o ne of the biggest fallouts from being busy and unfocused is that employees start to distrust their leader. We send these forces out to people and they send them to us, so they are multidirectional you could say and impact us in six different ways.

If we don't get manage them right, people tend to distrust our intentions. Let's unpack these forces in more detail and what you need to focus on to improve your results. James Clear. Changing from the inside-out magically transforms how people react and interact around us.

It requires leaders who live continuous improvement - being willing to update their point of view, being mindful of the stories they tell themselves and living their leadership brand. It is the only focus area we have the most control over. Good self-awareness levels also help you better identify which battles your team considers important to fight and which are best to leave alone.

To reduce unnecessary distractions from events outside of your control requires: 1. Directing Effort to a Positive Future To lift people's sights towards a brighter future requires being able to talk about a positive future.

Monitoring Real Time Data about Progress Leaders must continually monitor emerging trends and ensure their teams are ready for what lies ahead. They are real about where they are and regularly consult real-time information to give a true feel for how their team and the business is tracking.

They are honest about progress and don't cherry pick results. Effectively dealing with the external environment means being really clear on what you can and can't control.

I once ran a workshop with managers who wanted to complain about the culture and executives. They were more into ranting about what they couldn't change than trying to embrace what they could. This didn't help their team members nor themselves.

A self-aware leader is able to discern which battles are of utmost importance to their team members and which ones are insignificant.

When circumstances arise where leaders are unable to protect their employees, such as during layoffs, pay cuts, or cumbersome bureaucratic processes, the best leaders exhibit compassion, taking small actions to alleviate fears and finding ways to mitigate negative consequences.

They are honest about what's going on. This approach not only enhances the performance and well-being of their people but also fosters loyalty and support.

One of the distinguishing features of successful leaders is that they have learnt to focus on what's important. They start inwards - focusing on themselves, in order to be able to better focus on their interactions with others and then better discern what's of importance for their team to better navigate the uncertain, external environment.

Focused leaders have the ability to fully harness their attention. They possess a deep understanding of their own emotions and they have learnt to trust themselves and others. Additionally, they have a profound understanding of what others require from them, enabling them to navigate interpersonal dynamics with ease.

These leaders possess the remarkable ability to filter out distractions, allowing their minds to wander freely without preconceived notions. Understanding the interplay between these three forces and what you need to focus on, works towards you being seen as a trusted leader.

However, the pandemic merely reiterated the already brewing doubts over job security and the ardent necessity for reskilling and upskilling on a large scale. Today, the need, as well as the expectation, is clear as day: both employees and leaders must adopt continuous learning to stay relevant and competitive.

However, in spite of the stark warnings, employees still struggle to adopt continuous learning as a must-have, while organizations are unable to meet their skills quota.

And, one of the major causes for this to keep happening is that employees and leaders are not trained in the "skill of learning. And, this is where the learning mindset comes in.

Moreover, organizations seeking growth and improved performance in the new normal will have to focus on developing not only digital capabilities but also human capabilities. Digital transformation across the globe has assigned newer value to capability development, one that reflects the human side of communication, wellbeing, leadership, and improved relationships.

Behavioral skills will be key to achieving this synergy where skills like empathy, emotional intelligence, mindfulness, etc.

As we continue to navigate the pandemic and post-pandemic world and ready ourselves for whatever could be the next normal, unlocking learning mindsets and building human capabilities will remain a top priority to maximize performance and productivity with greater odds of success.
