The flu or influenza is caused by a virus. Several kinds of viruses can give you the flu. They may also help shorten how long you have the flu. Drinking water and other fluids is even more important when you have the flu.

This is true whether you have a respiratory flu or a stomach flu. Water helps to keep your nose, mouth, and throat moist. This helps your body get rid of built-up mucous and phlegm. Diarrhea and fever two common symptoms of a flu , can also cause water loss.

Sleeping can help boost your immune system. This helps your body fight off the flu virus. Cancel your usual routine and make sleep a priority to help get you back on your feet.

Drinking warm chicken or beef bone broth is a good way to help you stay hydrated. It helps to loosen and break up nose and sinus congestion. Bone broth is also naturally high in protein and minerals like sodium and potassium. Drinking broth is a good way to replenish these nutrients while you have the flu.

Plus, protein is important for rebuilding immune cells. You can buy ready-made varieties, but be sure to look for those that are low in sodium salt. You can also make your own broth by boiling chicken or beef bones. You can freeze portions of broth for future use.

You can shop online for bone broth. The mineral zinc is important for your immune system. This nutrient helps your body make germ-fighting white blood cells. Research shows that zinc might help ease cold and flu symptoms.

Zinc helps your body fight the flu virus and may slow down how fast it multiplies. You can take a zinc supplement or a multivitamin with zinc during flu season. You can normally get plenty of zinc from a balanced daily diet.

Foods that are high in zinc include:. You can shop for zinc supplements online. A warm water and salt rinse sometimes called a salt water gargle can soothe a sore throat.

It can also help to clear mucous. Do not swallow the salt water. Do not allow children to gargle until they can safely gargle with plain water. Several herbs have natural antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Star anise is a star-shaped spice from which oseltamivir was traditionally extracted. Oseltamivir phosphate better known as Tamiflu is a prescription drug used to speed recovery from or to prevent getting the flu.

Other herbs and green leafy teas also have germ-fighting and antioxidant benefits. An herbal tea may help your body fight off the flu virus. A hot herbal drink is also soothing to your throat and sinuses.

Sweeten herbal teas with pure honey. Honey, royal jelly, and other bee products have been found to have natural antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Some types of essential oils may help protect you against certain viruses and bacteria. One study found that tea tree oil helps to fight the flu virus by slowing or stopping the rate that the virus multiplies.

This shows that it may help to block the flu virus from multiplying. In practice, you might add a few drops of tea tree oil to liquid hand soap when you wash your hands or mixed into lotion you use.

Some commercially made mouthwashes include it as an ingredient. Other plant and herbal essential oils may also work as natural antibiotics and antivirals. These include:.

Use essential oils only as directed. Do not ingest essential oils, many are toxic. You can add fresh and dried herbs and spices to food to get similar benefits.

This was Thursday evening. I began by taking a tbsp of elderberry syrup with echinacia, tbsp of fire cider, a full dropper of liquid zinc which i held in my throat as long as I was able before I swallowed. I also took a full dropper of willow bark tincture for my headache.

Then I made myself a large cup of ginger, lemon, honey tea and went to bed. The next day my symptons included a deep chest cough, fever, body aches and extreme fatique. I continued with my regimen of elderberry syrup, added echinacia tincture, fire cider, mullein tincture and took those every hour.

I sipped ginger, lemon, honey tea all day as I was able. I also took white willow bark every couple of hours and oil of oregano capsules twice a day. This was on Friday. I continued this regimen on Saturday and also because the weather was beautiful, even though I was exhausted, I tried to sit in the sunshine for an hour.

I also made myself a healing chicken soup with lots of onion, garlic, astragulus, celery, and mushrooms and ate that. I was not able to eat much up until this point. I was so fatigued but I could not sleep well, at times I had a racing heartbeat.

By Sunday morning, I felt like a new person. I have never been so happy to feel better and to have had these wonderful, helpful, healing herbs to help me through it.

I continued to have a very deep chest cough for the next few weeks. I have not been sick in years and this was a tough one. Herbs worked beautiful for me and I use them daily to keep up my immune system.

Love all your information and recipe for the elderberry tea. Luckily, there are a number of powerful antiviral herbs that boost the immune system , reduce inflammation and fight infections. A virus is a small infectious agent that can only replicate inside the living cells of other organisms.

Viruses can infect all types of life forms — humans, animals, plants and microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea. There are many ways that a virus spreads. In animals, a virus is carried by blood-sucking insects. Some viruses, like influenza, are spread by coughing and sneezing.

Viruses like viral gastroenteritis infectious diarrhea are transmitted by the fecal—oral route which is a result of poor sanitation and are passed from person to person by contact or enter the body through food and water. Antiviral herbs inhibit the development of viruses. Many of the best antiviral herbs boost the immune system, which allows the body to attack viral pathogens.

This can be even better than attacking specific pathogens, which antiviral drugs are designed to do, because pathogens mutate over time and become less susceptible to treatment. Not only do antiviral herbs fight viral infections, boost the immune system and work as flu natural remedies, but they have a number of other health benefits, such as cardiovascular, digestive and anti-inflammatory support.

There is considerable evidence suggesting that phytochemicals in echinacea have the capacity to reduce virus infections and tumors. Echinacea is one of the most powerful natural antivirals against human viruses. It contains a compound called echinacein that inhibits bacteria and viruses from penetrating healthy cells.

This greatly reduces the chances of contracting any type of infection while consuming echinacea. Some more echinacea benefits include its ability to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, improve skin problems, treat upper respiratory issues and improve mental health. The antiviral herbomineral shilajit also appears to help reduce pain and inflammation.

Elderberry has powerful immune-boosting, antiviral properties. Several studies conclude that elderberry may help to shorten the duration of cold symptoms. Elderberry is rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds.

It also contains an immunostimulant compound called anthocyanidins. Some of the most popular forms are elderberry syrup, gummies and juice. Andrographis is one of the most popular medicinal plants that has been used for centuries in America, Asia and Africa. It possesses powerful compounds that have antiviral, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Traditionally, andrographis was used for influenza and malaria. Today, researchers have explored andrographis as a potent antiviral remedy.

It has been deemed a miraculous compound for restraining virus replication and virus development. A study published in Microbes and Infection found that when andrographolide the active ingredient in andrographis was given to mice with the influenza virus, along with a virus entry inhibitor, the combination increased survival rate, diminished lung pathology, decreased the virus load, and reduced inflammatory cytokines.

Andrographis is available in capsule and tincture forms, and it can be found online or in most health food stores. Experiments have shown that garlic — or specific chemical compounds found in garlic — is highly effective at killing countless microorganisms responsible for some of the most common and rarest infections, including tuberculosis, pneumonia, thrush and herpes.

Not only is it one of the best antiviral herbs for herpes, but its properties also help to treat eye infections and it works as a natural ear infection remedy. Some more raw garlic benefits include its ability to reduce the risk of cancer, control hypertension, boost cardiovascular health and fight hair loss.

To make a garlic oil infusion at home, crush garlic cloves and add them to a carrier oil like olive oil. Let the mixture sit for about five hours, and then strain the bits of garlic and keep the oil in a jar with a lid.

This infusion can also be used as an antiviral herb for cold sores when used topically. Bite down once to release the allicin ; then swallow with water like a pill. Scientific studies have shown that astragalus has antiviral properties and stimulates the immune system, suggesting that it may help remedy the common cold or flu.

A study evaluated the effects of astragalus on herpes simplex virus type 1 and found that the herb has obvious inhibiting efficacy. Another study published in the Chinese Medical Sciences Journal concluded that astragalus is able to inhibit the growth of coxsackie B virus in mice.

Not only does it work as a natural viral infection treatment, but astragalus also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and it is used on the skin for wound care.

Love all your information and recipe for the elderberry tea. Makes me wish I had become an herbalist 🌿! At least we have you for great resources. My friend jim mcdonald loves to point out that if you use herbs in your life then you are definitely an herbalist.

I made something close to this recently for my son. The next day he wakes up his normal exuberant young self. I made it purely instinctually, knowing that they all worked to help with fever and health. Now I only need to find a supply of elder!

My grandma gave me a recipe for something close to this many years ago. It included the yarrow, and elder flower, but no rose-hips or mint.

Instead she used echinacea, mullein and lemon balm. It works great. Would you be willing to share your recipe? Hello Rosales. Thank you so much for this very informative article.

It has been a real eye opener for me. I am presently doing a herbal medicine course here in the UK and this information is invaluable.

Thank you once again and keep up the great work. God bless you all. Thank you for a new learning experience,I am keen to make a study for longevity and a healthy life through the usage of herbs. Thank you for all you do to teach us how to stay healthy. I made Elderberry syrup from the recipe in your first book which is easy to follow and very informative.

I did not have apple juice so I used organic apple cider. I used half the amount and adjusted the honey for my taste. However, I only have a cold I started on my syrup and garlic honey. I know it greatly diminished my symptoms. Thank you. I intend to make a bled of this for myself and family, however, I strongly dislike mint flavored tea.

Will probably use Lemon Balm. Looking for other good suggestions for a substitute. Ginger, Holy Basil, Licorice……..? Perhaps I will break down and collect some flowers this year??? One of my favorite herbs that is just now popping up in central Missouri is stinging nettle, which I will be picking some today!

Thanks for all your information. I am in awe of your knowledge! This site hosts Apothecary, Herb Fairies, the Herbal Remedy Kit videos, Herbal Cold Care and Taste of Herbs.
