Previous studies, he explains, were asking questions like "When you age, which genes are getting turned on and which genes are getting turned off?

But nobody was asking how the transcription process itself changes as we age, a line of inquiry that could yield insights to ultimately help us reverse, or stop, decline. Transcription is fundamental to Beyer's research as it is the process in which a cell makes an RNA copy of a piece of DNA.

This copy is important because it carries the genetic information needed to make new proteins in a cell. Proteins determine the health and function of the cells, and cells then structure all living things.

Throughout our lives, our cells regenerate, "but each cell is different, and what makes them different are the different genes that are activated in it," explains Beyer. There are many different types of cells in the human body: nerve cells, muscle cells, blood cells, skin cells, and so on.

And because each cell fulfils a different function, a different set of genes are activated transcribed in each cell type. The "machine" - as Beyer calls it - responsible for making the transcription copy of the gene sequences is called Pol II RNA polymerase II.

Previous research had already proven that low-calorie diets and inhibiting insulin signalling - blocking the signal between insulin and cells - could delay ageing and extend lifespan in many animals.

The investigation - a joint collaboration of 26 people across six different labs - first worked with worms, mice and fruit flies genetically modified to inhibit insulin signalling as well as with mice on a low-calorie diet to determine the performance of cell transcription in old age.

In both cases, Pol II reacted and travelled more slowly, making fewer mistakes. So, what are you waiting for? Regular yoga practice can help reduce the appearance of premature ageing. Even meditation can help flush away toxins in your skin as you breathe in the good and breathe out the bad.

Apply self-tanner rather than get a tan. Every time you get a tan, you prematurely age your skin. This holds true if you get a tan from the sun, a tanning bed, or other indoor tanning equipment.

All emit harmful UV rays that accelerate how quickly your skin ages. If you smoke, stop. Smoking greatly speeds up how quickly skin ages.

It causes wrinkles and a dull, sallow complexion. Avoid repetitive facial expressions. When you make a facial expression, you contract the underlying muscles. If you repeatedly contract the same muscles for many years, these lines become permanent. Wearing sunglasses can help reduce lines caused by squinting.

Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Findings from a few studies suggest that eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables may help prevent damage that leads to premature skin aging. Findings from research studies also suggest that a diet containing lots of sugar or other refined carbohydrates can accelerate aging.

Drink less alcohol. Alcohol is rough on the skin. It dehydrates the skin, and in time, damages the skin.

This can make us look older. Exercise most days of the week. Findings from a few studies suggest that moderate exercise can improve circulation and boost the immune system.

This, in turn, may give the skin a more-youthful appearance. Cleanse your skin gently. Scrubbing your skin clean can irritate your skin. Irritating your skin accelerates skin aging.

Gentle washing helps to remove pollution, makeup, and other substances without irritating your skin. Wash your face twice a day and after sweating heavily.

Perspiration, especially when wearing a hat or helmet, irritates the skin, so you want to wash your skin as soon as possible after sweating.
