Certification criteria In New Zealand, beekeepers need to be certified before they can claim that their honey is organic. Ideally, organic hives should be located in areas surrounded by wild trees and plant life.

If there are neighbouring farms, orchards, or gardens within the 3km radius, beekeepers need to speak to the owners and collect statements regarding their use of pesticides.

All supplements and products used on hives should be organic — wax, pollen, and oils. When hives need to be treated for Varroa mites or other infestations, beekeepers should use approved organic treatments rather than chemical pesticides. Beyond the standards Meeting the minimum organic standard is one thing, but many organic beekeepers choose to take their commitment further.

We fed the colonies Pro-Sweet invert syrup at a rate of 2 gallons every two weeks until the flow began in late May. Figure 3. Feeding Pro-Sweet to the colonies. The goal of the first year was to have a brood nest full of drawn comb. We used all medium boxes and considered the bottom three boxes to be the brood nest.

We employed drone brood removal by scraping capped drone brood on special drone frames every two weeks. Figure 4. A frame of capped drone brood. Figure 5. Scraping capped drone brood. We kept the entrance reducer at the 4-inch opening and used a mouse guard made from ½ inch hardware cloth at all times, except when the entrance had to be fully open while formic acid treatments were in place.

We fed the colonies or added supers, as needed. Figure 9. Hive inspection. We conducted a Varroa mite alcohol wash in the field every four weeks using ½ cup of bees.

A treatment threshold of four mites in a wash exceeding 1 percent infestation was used to trigger the need for a mite treatment. If one colony in the apiary was at this threshold, all of the colonies in that apiary received a treatment. Figure Varroa mites in a filter.

Only when the beekeeper has proven that he or she can keep to organic standards does the certificate become awarded. Then the certificate has to be renewed each year.. In addition, the certifying body will make unannounced visits to the hives to ensure the beekeeper is following organic principles.

The beekeeper will have to undergo an annual audit to show the amount of organic honey produced and that they have followed all the requirements.

Here at The Raw Honey Shop, we have to show that we keep full records of all the organic honey we receive and send out so that every jar is traceable. The honey also has to be stored in such a way that it cannot become mixed up with non organic honey.

Therefore, in our warehouse the organic honey is kept separately from the raw but not certified organic honey. Most of the organic honey we sell is certified organic under the EUs scheme via the different organic certifiers in Europe. Then that certification is ratified by the Soil Association, who are the UKs organic certifying body.

So they check that all our honey meets organic standards and liaise with the various organic certifiers in Europe to verify that the certification we receive for the different honeys meets the required standards.

We have to provide to the Soil Association copies of the organic certificates from all the individual beekeepers and then they provide an overall certificate, which covers us for selling organic honey in the UK.

The Soil Association have some additional standards, above EU standards, such as honey cannot be fine filtered to prolong shelf life keep runny or heat the honey over 60 degrees centigrade. Honey Rewards. Create your account Lost password? First name. Last name. Your cart is empty.
