Choice of media can be adjusted according to the community within which you are based. If your eye care center is located in a community with a high elderly population, for example, it is probably best to run television or newspaper advertisements. However, if you want to target the younger generation, or if your eye care center provides services targeted to younger populations such as orthokeratology, myopia control, or cosmetic services , it is best to run advertisements on social media platforms, such as Instagram or Facebook.

You can also promote awareness through community activities that encourage good eye health behavior. One of the greatest barriers to health care is access to health care facilities. If patients face barriers to access because of cost, distance, language, or other reasons, efforts to raise awareness will not enhance their eye health.

Thus, creating better accessibility to care is a must when trying to raise awareness. This cannot be accomplished through the actions of one clinic alone; the combined efforts of the local government and health care facilities are required.

I believe preventive medicine is the future of health care, and this begins with us, our patients' eye health care providers. There are multiple ways to raise and promote awareness about eye health, and sometimes different options must be tested before deciding what is best for a community in order to provide the highest quality of care to the greatest number of people.

Many patients will go to their community pharmacy to seek over-the-counter or self-care medication for eye conditions. Some prescribed systemic medications may also contribute to eye problems see article on page 14 , so there really is a need to have a very close relationship between eye care practitioners and pharmacists.

So it is useful to empower the people who work there with basic knowledge of common eye disorders. In , I was invited to present at a series of workshops for pharmacists, hosted by Novartis Ghana. We spent time discussing what might bring the patients to pharmacists.

These were the most common reasons shared by the pharmacists:. As a rule of thumb, any patient presenting with pain in the eye should be referred for further investigation immediately. Pharmacists also play an important role in health promotion by providing patient education and counselling.

You might think your vision is fine or that your eyes are healthy, but visiting your eye care professional for a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to really be sure. In addition, many common eye diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and age-related macular degeneration, often have no warning signs.

A dilated eye exam is the only way to detect these diseases in their early stages. During a comprehensive dilated eye exam, your eye care professional places drops in your eyes to dilate, or widen, the pupil to allow more light to enter the eye—the same way an open door lets more light into a dark room.

This process enables your eye care professional to get a good look at the back of the eyes and examine them for any signs of damage or disease. Ask your health care team to help you set and reach goals to manage your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol—also known as the ABCs of diabetes.

Talk to your family members about their eye health history. Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing diabetes and other systemic conditions, which can lead to vision loss, such as diabetic eye disease or glaucoma.

Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home. Most protective eyewear lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is 10 times stronger than other plastics. Many eye care providers sell protective eyewear, as do some sporting goods stores.

Smoking is as bad for your eyes as it is for the rest of your body. Research has linked smoking to an increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataract, and optic nerve damage, all of which can lead to blindness.

ii, iii. When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99 to percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. If you spend a lot of time at the computer or focusing on any one thing, you sometimes forget to blink and your eyes can get fatigued.

Try the rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. This short exercise can help reduce eyestrain. To avoid the risk of infection, always wash your hands thoroughly before putting in or taking out your contact lenses.
