Writing helped me proactively channel my emotions and put my passions travelling, eating and socialising to good use! It can be difficult to find a way out of a dark place at times, but getting creative really is one of the best ways to do it. Choose fun! But one thing you can add to your daily to-do list is to prioritise something you enjoy every day! I found listening to some of my favourite music and watching tv shows I enjoyed growing up evoked that child-like spirit that I have long since suppressed!

I had to simply enjoy my life as it was at that moment in time and take each day as it came, which is now something I continue to do.

While happiness is a state that people aim to achieve, joy encompasses the processes that may result in happiness. Change your routine. Trying adding a minute burst of joy into your normal morning, afternoon or evening routine which can give you a moment of delight to look forward to.

Take these moments to be quiet and allow your thoughts to work their way to the surface. I vary the time of day that I do this. Sometimes I do this first thing in the morning, sometimes in the middle of the day when I need a break, and sometimes at night before going to bed. It allows you to clear the clutter from your brain and open you up to a heightened sense of awareness.

And this will also help you to slow down. Without repeating anything. Things that bring joy, peace, and happiness. And awareness is key. The good news is you get to decide. It can be anything that you notice when taking the steps above.

Anything that brings you joy or makes you see the beauty in the world. A smile from a stranger. A cool breeze on a warm day. The beautiful song of a cardinal or a mockingbird. The sound of crickets outside. The feeling you get when your child holds your hand.

The warmth from the sun on a bright day. The laughter of a stranger while you pass by them on a busy sidewalk. I could go on forever. These are just a few examples. Once you start noticing the little things, how do you enjoy them fully? I find that the following works best:.

Now, you may be thinking that this will take some work and effort. And, for this to become a habit, you do have to work a bit at it. But it only takes a few seconds to do in practice.

And over time it will become second nature. This piece of folk advice has been around for aeons, and is one that many of us try to live by.

But is there actually any real benefit to this practice? On a physiological level, engaging in micro-joys can improve our vagal tone. The vagus nerve is also linked to mood and anxiety disorders, and regulating stress , so the more stimulated it is the better off you may be. On a social level, positive emotions can improve relationships and potentially lead to positivity resonance — a momentary connection between people that enhances health, increases life-span and meaning in life.

Experiencing positive emotions not only boosts momentary happiness, but it also helps us to develop qualities such as optimism and resilience, which can help protect against distress and poor mental health in the future. As a travel blogger, nothing fulfilled me more than discovering somewhere new, and exploring a new place in the world each trip at a time.

However, the more I travelled, sadly the more complacent I found myself becoming. Whilst none of us need reminding of the year that followed, in some ways being grounded literally and not being able to fly off somewhere new helped me find small moments of happiness in my everyday life.

I had to simply enjoy my life as it was at that moment in time and take each day as it came, which is now something I continue to do.
