In one particular case, Monte Nido was able to help one of the most challenging patients of my career come to terms with her anorexia, bulimia, social and family issues and enable her to return to college and begin the process of normalizing the relationships in her life.

I was also pleased to have received interim updates on her progress from her team. The best part, however, was seeing the beaming face of my patient as she went through graduation at Monte Nido. I was not there in person on the day of her graduation, but because Monte Nido graciously called and asked if I would like a copy of the graduation, I was able to see the graduation process and share my patients experience and excitement.

Costin, who herself recovered from an eating disorder, is founder and executive director of The Eating Disorder Center of California and Monte Nido, with centers in California and Oregon. Here is a brief summary of her information- and advice-rich talk.

AFTER FOUR YEARS OF FIGHTING anorexia, my daughter and I came to Monte Nido. We had experienced multiple treatment centers and treatment types. It was the meeting with Carolyn that provided the first glimmer of hope that my daughter would survive this illness.

I made the decision to trust Carolyn with my daughter. At Monte Nido Carolyn has brought together a wondrous group of individuals who soften the treatment demands with love and support. The focus is on living, not just surviving. After multiple stays in two other major programs, the uniqueness of the program at Monte Nido is the reason our daughter is alive today and getting on with her life.

Staffed by individuals who not only talked the talk, but had literally walked the walk and were able to relate to our daughter on every level.

Thank God for Monte Nido. After checking into a number of programs in several states, we selected Monte Nido and are profoundly grateful we did.

Carolyn Costin and the staff at Monte Nido addressed the physical and psychological issues facing our daughter in a way no one else had. Their supportive, yet firm, counseling greatly assisted our daughter and us. Today, she is again healthy, full of life and increased self-worth, and succeeding in college.

Monte Nido deserves a great deal of credit, and we unhesitatingly recommend Monte Nido to others. There was a time when I felt that only I could save my child-just like taking her to the doctor for an ear infection.

When all of my efforts failed, and she continued spiraling downward, I somehow summoned the courage to put her in the hands of Monte Nido. Slowly, patiently, and always lovingly, they led Molly to the truth and helped her achieve independence from her disease.

She learned about physiology, about nutrition, about medications. But she learned mostly to love and care about herself and to release herself from the demands anorexia was making on her.

Today she is healthy, confident, engaged in life, and surrounded by caring friends. With great confidence and personal conviction, I would recommend Monte Nido most highly and most sincerely.

MY FAMILY AND I WANT TO EXPRESS OUR HEARTFELT thanks for the caring environment you provided for our daughter while she was in residence. You cannot imagine how impressed we all were with not only the treatment she received and continues to receive but the amount of warmth and love offered to all the young women and their families.

In our opinion you cannot walk away from Monte Nido without a good feeling in your heart; knowing that the person you love is in the right place to help her overcome her behavior problems. We believe that our daughter is not the only person in the family to have been benefited from your system.

The sessions were liberating, educational and emotional. Each of us feels our own personal attachment to Monte Nido because of the help and consideration we were afforded on our visits.

I can truly say that I have never felt closer to my family. May God continue to bless you all in your professional and personal lives. As overwhelming and difficult as last year was at times we know that when everything was said and done that it evolved as it was meant to.

That reason was Monte Nido. We know how lucky we are that she was able to get there. We knew that it was always there…. You have created an amazing haven for girls like our daughter. It has been like watching a caterpillar grow into a butterfly.

Over the course of the past couple of months I have had the blessing of watching my sister fight to win her life back, and it has changed how I live mine.

You speak and treat us all in a way that reminds us what really matters in life. Because of your compassionate guidance, my sister is truly living again.

She allows herself to be happy and knows it is ok to be sad. She has a freeness and beauty about her that I have not seen in years.

As a family, you have shown us that although this world is messy at times, there is so much love. You have reminded us to stop aiming for perfection and start accepting each other…with all our beautiful imperfections.

No matter what happens tomorrow, we are so incredibly fortunate to have each other. I am not sure how you go about thanking a group of individuals for the blessings above.

Thank you seems insufficient, for what you have given my family is immeasurable. The professionals at Monte Nido at Laurel Hill in Boston are unique in that they not only provide very effective treatment for eating disorders — they do so in a safe, caring and patient friendly environment.

Our daughter had been in two previous treatment facilities for anorexia that proved to be abject failures. The staff at Monte Nido understands what both the patient and their families are going through as some of them are recovered anorexic patients!

I am so thankful for the love and the care that my daughter is receiving from the MN staff. I highly recommend Monte Nido to anyone who is suffering from an eating disorder.

Prior to our experience at Monte Nido, our outlook was dark and we felt that there was no real hope for her recovery. Dear Carolyn Costin- It has taken me an entire week to formulate my words of thanks to you for what you have offered my daughter.

You have given her not just incredible nurturing but unprecedented support in her struggle. Please know that she never could have found a stronger endorsement from outside herself of how important she is. The staff at Monte Nido has done something no other staff has been able to do.

You have done what no other person has done. Eight years ago, we discovered that our daughter suffers from anorexia. Thus began a journey for us which has been confronting, full of uncertainty, at many times frightening and ultimately exhausting. We tried absolutely everything we could to seek help for our daughter in Australia, and to find ways to help her survive the starvation and self harm that comes with this little understood disease.

For You. For Professionals. Renfrew Locations. With treatment, however, people can recover completely from eating disorders. Although eating disorders often appear during the teen years or young adulthood, they may also develop during childhood or later in life 40 years and older. Remember: People with eating disorders may appear healthy, yet be extremely ill.

Common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder. Each of these disorders is associated with different but sometimes overlapping symptoms.

People exhibiting any combination of these symptoms may have an eating disorder and should be evaluated by a health care provider. Anorexia nervosa is a condition where people avoid food, severely restrict food, or eat very small quantities of only certain foods.

They also may weigh themselves repeatedly. Even when dangerously underweight, they may see themselves as overweight. There are two subtypes of anorexia nervosa: a restrictive subtype and a binge-purge subtype.

Restrictive : People with the restrictive subtype of anorexia nervosa severely limit the amount and type of food they consume. Binge-Purge : People with the binge-purge subtype of anorexia nervosa also greatly restrict the amount and type of food they consume. In addition, they may have binge-eating and purging episodes—eating large amounts of food in a short time followed by vomiting or using laxatives or diuretics to get rid of what was consumed.

Anorexia nervosa can be fatal. It has an extremely high death mortality rate compared with other mental disorders. People with anorexia are at risk of dying from medical complications associated with starvation. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people diagnosed with anorexia nervosa.

If you or someone you know is in immediate distress or is thinking about hurting themselves, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline toll-free at TALK You also can text the Crisis Text Line HELLO to or use the Lifeline Chat on the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline website.

If you suspect a medical emergency, seek medical attention or call immediately. Bulimia nervosa is a condition where people have recurrent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food and feeling a lack of control over their eating.

This binge eating is followed by behaviors that compensate for the overeating to prevent weight gain, such as forced vomiting, excessive use of laxatives or diuretics, fasting, excessive exercise, or a combination of these behaviors. Unlike those with anorexia nervosa, people with bulimia nervosa may maintain a normal weight or be overweight.

Binge-eating disorder is a condition where people lose control of their eating and have reoccurring episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food. Unlike bulimia nervosa, periods of binge eating are not followed by purging, excessive exercise, or fasting. As a result, people with binge-eating disorder are often overweight or obese.

Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder ARFID , previously known as selective eating disorder, is a condition where people limit the amount or type of food eaten. Unlike anorexia nervosa, people with ARFID do not have a distorted body image or extreme fear of gaining weight.

ARFID is most common in middle childhood and usually has an earlier onset than other eating disorders. Many children go through phases of picky eating, but a child with ARFID does not eat enough calories to grow and develop properly, and an adult with ARFID does not eat enough calories to maintain basic body function.

Eating disorders can be treated successfully. Early detection and treatment are important for a full recovery. People with eating disorders are at higher risk for suicide and medical complications. Family members can encourage the person with eating or body image issues to seek help. They also can provide support during treatment and can be a great ally to both the individual and the health care provider.

Research suggests that incorporating the family into treatment for eating disorders can improve treatment outcomes, particularly for adolescents.

Treatment plans for eating disorders include psychotherapy, medical care and monitoring, nutritional counseling, medications, or a combination of these approaches. Typical treatment goals include:. People with eating disorders also may have other mental disorders such as depression or anxiety or problems with substance use.

For general information about psychotherapies, visit the National Institute of Mental Health NIMH psychotherapies webpage.

Research also suggests that medications may help treat some eating disorders and co-occurring anxiety or depression related to eating disorders. Information about medications changes frequently, so talk to your health care provider. Visit the U.

Food and Drug Administration FDA website for the latest warnings, patient medication guides, and FDA-approved medications. If you're unsure where to get help, your health care provider is a good place to start.

Your health care provider can refer you to a qualified mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist, who has experience treating eating disorders. You can learn more about getting help and finding a health care provider on NIMH's Help for Mental Illnesses webpage.

If you need help identifying a provider in your area, call the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration SAMHSA Treatment Referral Helpline at HELP For additional resources, visit the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality website.

NIMH supports a wide range of research, including clinical trials that look at new ways to prevent, detect, or treat diseases and conditions, including eating disorders.

Although individuals may benefit from being part of a clinical trial, participants should be aware that the primary purpose of a clinical trial is to gain new scientific knowledge so that others may be better helped in the future. Researchers at NIMH and around the country conduct clinical trials with patients and healthy volunteers.

Talk to your health care provider about clinical trials, their benefits and risks, and whether one is right for you. For more information about clinical research and how to find clinical trials being conducted around the country, visit NIMH's clinical trials webpage.

All I Want to say is THANK YOU. I never believed I could talk to anyone about her without crying. The next phone call always seemed to be about a new crisis. In the last several years I have a happy loving daughter. Carolyn you have made a monumental difference in our lives. You are always in my thoughts.

YOU HAVE SHOWN ME HOW TO FEEL FREE AND FEARLESS, to have inner peace and serenity. Thank you for all of this. And for the incredible feeling of being able to trust that even after I leave, I can always come visit or call Monte Nido and I will be loved and supported.

WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS all of the love and gratitude I have for Monte Nido. Monte Nido saved my life. Carolyn, you and Monte Nido have a big place in my heart forever.

I am able to laugh and love again because of the wisdom and encouragement you and Monte Nido have provided for me. Thank you. YOU SUCCEEDED in accomplishing the one thing you promised to do for me. You continuously said that you just wanted to show me the life I could have and then it would be my choice whether I chose it or not.

Well, you showed me that life and I chose it. You gave me life in my mind, body, and spirit. You gave me the most precious gift anyone could possibly give me.

THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME there can be tenderness in treatment; for teaching me I can express my needs; reassuring me they are appropriate, and they can be met; for appreciating that the battle is between me and me, and letting me have a say in everything I signed up for; always being honest with me; and for telling me throughout my entire time here that you enjoy so many things about me and enjoy working with me.

WHAT CAN I SAY? Who knew? I guess miracles really do happen. The miracle in this case being Monte Nido and all the wonderful people who are associated with it.

I never knew people could care so much and not just because it was their job. I never knew what it was like to trust someone. I never knew what it was like to have someone really listen when I spoke.

I feel very fortunate to have been one of the original six who first arrived here. I think to the future when many will have come and gone, and success and the exposure will be great. Thank you for letting me into your lives.

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do and for creating such and amazing healing space and for providing me with the opportunity at the transition house, Bella Mar, to build a life for myself.

Thank you for challenging me, questioning me and most of all helping me to heal. Thank you so, so much Carolyn and Monte Nido staff.

For a long time, I have tried to find the words to express the amount of gratitude I have towards Carolyn and the Monte Nido Staff. The past ten years of my life have passed in a slow, foggy, rapid blur. I now know and am willing to fight for my desire.

I can now see why fighting is always worth it. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to meet myself, the stillness to reach my soul, and the power to know I deserve this new life. With love, AP. Thank you Carolyn for creating a place like Montenido, I wish there were many more.

These past months at Montenido have save my life. I came in exhausted of living. I believed that the pain of life was too great for me to handle.

I have learned more about being alive, and about relationships in my time here than I ever have in the past. I have never experienced such unconditional love and support and more than that- hope. I strongly believe that what you have created at Montenido is unique and very special indeed. You and other members of staff here have given me hope that I can do well.

I have often felt like a hopeless case — that I will never be better than I am now, but you have changed that for me, thank you. After several failed stints in treatment centers and medical procedures I admitted to Montnido.

They pool their resources together to create an individualized treatment plan within a nurturing, supportive atmosphere, which is conducive to healing. I appreciated and often reflect on the tasteful and personal touches that enhanced my experience there i. oversized cozy pillows, fresh cut flowers, candles, sparkling pool and relaxing swings.

Over a year later, I am thankful and humble to report that I am doing remarkably well. Aside from recovering from an eating disorder, the work I did at Montenido, empowered me.

They cared enough about me to find me an outpatient therapist that is perfect for me and has continued to guide and support me over the last nine months.

I can finally look back and have clarity that has helped me make choices and take action that brings hope and optimism rather than replicating the same old destructive behaviors.

When I got to Montenido I was beyond hopeless. My heart was still beating but my eating disorder had sucked out all life from me… I was surrounded by beautiful and loving people while in treatment.

I slowly started to heal and my soul and spirit came to life in a new way. Learning how to speak my truth however scary it may be and truly living from my soul self has been life changing. I have come a long way in a year. When I get overwhelmed and want to throw my hands up in the air and give up, I have to stop and remember to take life moment by moment.

Today I need to eat my food and keep my food. I need to smile, laugh and hug my children. Thank you to all of the beautiful souls that have come into my life since being at Montenido. Each and every one of you have made a difference. I remember my time at Montenido was one of my most terrible moments in life because it made me face reality, my struggles, and self-doubts.

Despite that, it was a place of comfort at the same time in which I felt safe and not judged. I never felt as much love as I did there, where people genuinely showed their love and kindness to me.

Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity. Although it is so hard to be gentle with my soul, Montenido has shown me that it is there. Montenido has nurtured my soul when I did nothing but destroy it. They saved my life. These temperament traits can be modified through new coping strategies, to allow these traits to become assets rather than liabilities.

Through both our research and our work with thousands of people suffering from eating disorder symptoms, we strongly believe that people do NOT choose to have eating disorders, they do NOT choose to suffer, and families do NOT cause eating disorders but rather are the critical factor in successful recovery and relapse prevention.

After the initial assessment, the Admissions Clinician will communicate with you about any relevant diagnoses, treatment recommendations, and, if needed, referrals based on your insurance, symptom level, geographic location, and readiness for treatment.

The comprehensive evaluation is the first step in creating your individualized treatment plan. Our Admissions Clinicians are masters-level, senior clinicians who specialize in eating disorders and related symptoms.

They understand that it is an incredibly courageous and difficult decision to initiate treatment. They understand that ambivalence is normal—people both want to start treatment AND change can be very scary. Contact an Admissions Clinician today to learn more about our treatment programs and how we may be a good fit for you and your family.

We understand that every individual is unique and no one fits perfectly into diagnostic labels. Individual treatment plans target specific behaviors or emotions that people wish to change in order to reduce their suffering and build a life worth living.

All of our clinicians are full-time employees, ensuring that you have access to each of your team members at all times. Family Based Therapy FBT , also called the Maudsley Model, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy DBT make up the foundation of our Pediatric and Adolescent Programs. As clinicians and researchers, we are experts in eating disorders, and you are the expert on your child.

By training parents in eating disorders, parents are able to take the lead in feeding their children, returning them to their hobbies, sports, and interests, and preventing future relapses. FBT is the gold-standard in eating disorder treatment and is the ONLY evidence-based treatment for pediatric and adolescent eating disorders.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy DBT is the foundation of our Adult Programs. The term "dialectical" means a synthesis or integration of opposites. The primary dialectic within DBT is between the seemingly opposite strategies of acceptance and change.

For example, DBT therapists accept clients as they are while also acknowledging that they need to change in order to reach their goals.

Our therapists take a non-judgmental therapeutic approach that balances acceptance with teaching skills for managing dysregulated emotions that can trigger eating disorder symptoms. This is an excellent video explaining DBT. Bingeing Feeling out-of-control while eating more than you intend to and more than your body needs in one sitting; followed by feelings of shame and guilt.

Anxiety Feelings of worry, nervousness, unease about things that may or may not happen in the future. Often accompanied by body sensations such a stomach aches, fast beating heart, and racing thoughts. Depression Lack of pleasure in things you once enjoyed; feelings of guilt, worthlessness, hopelessness; difficulties with sleep and appetite.

Self-harm Intentionally harming your body through cutting, burning, purging, etc.

Thus began a journey for us which has been confronting, full of uncertainty, at many times frightening and ultimately exhausting. We tried absolutely everything we could to seek help for our daughter in Australia, and to find ways to help her survive the starvation and self harm that comes with this little understood disease.

At some points we saw signs of improvement and felt there was hope, but these were always dashed as she would invariably relapse to an even more dangerous weight and loss of mental health.

Our daughter found Monte Nido from the internet and discovered a holistic approach to managing and seeking to cure eating disorders. It is holistic in the sense that the program seeks to both keep the patient alive avoid starvation , as well as rebuild mental health which as the core of the disease.

Finally the program offers a step by step path back to a more normal life where the patient can manage their own eating, mental health, self perception and self esteem, and ultimately reestablish independence.

When we became aware of the program, it was the first time we saw a potential path for our daughter to survive. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Carolyn for a great job to manage Monte Nido together with her capable team of staff.

I often think of Monte Nido. None of this would have been possible without you and Monte Nido! Her Eating Disorder has been cured if that is correct to say. Her life is her own and not controlled by the eating disorder. Eating problems are in the past and she has her future to look forward to.

No words can ever explain or be grateful enough to thank them for my gift.

An angel was truly watching over me when he blessed me with Montenido. Montenido is my Angel of Grace. Monte Nido. Call Today.
